(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption has been awarded the Wilmer Shields Rich Award from the Council on Foundations and The Communications Network for its solid communications strategy that explains the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids (WWK) program and the five-year research proving its effectiveness.

Concurrent to releasing research that shows the WWK model is up to three times more effective at finding permanent and loving homes for children in foster care, the Foundation developed the Unadoptable is Unacceptable video to share the research results in an clear, concise and attention-grabbing way.

The visual story told by this two-minute video has transformed the conversation about children in foster care who have been forgotten or labeled unadoptable. It has launched numerous conversations with the media, and federal and state policymakers, and has propelled the Foundation even further as a thought leader in the child welfare arena.

“This program and our communications strategy surrounding it has opened doors to audiences the Foundation never imagined, and has elevated our conversation about older youth and those most at risk of aging out of care,” said Rita Soronen, Foundation president and CEO. “The rapid growth we have seen in the Wendy’s Wonderful Kids Child-Focused Recruitment program has allowed us to add more people to help us carry out our mission, and brought us closer to finding forever families for all children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted.”

The Wilmer Shields Rich Awards spotlight foundation and corporate giving programs that effectively use communications strategies to achieve goals and further organizational missions. The awards program seeks to educate the philanthropic field about the importance of integrating communications into programs and mission.

The California Endowment, Greater New Orleans Foundation and Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation also are recipients of the 2013 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards.
