“When a child ages out of foster care at 18, not because they’re bad kids, not because they’re any less capable than any other child, but because they don’t have the safety net of family, they’re at a much higher risk of negative outcomes,” shared Rita Soronen, president & CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption in an article for Smart Business Magazine.
Smart Business profiles how the Foundation is working to expand its Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program across North America to find loving, adoptive homes for children most at risk of aging out of foster care without a family, including teenagers, children with special needs and siblings.
“Things like homelessness, being under-educated, unemployed, early parenting, substance abuse — all those things can happen to a child that can’t go home and say, ‘I need some help, mom. I need some help, dad,’” Soronen added.
In 2019, Rita was honored by Smart Business with a Smart 50 Award, which recognizes top executives of the 50 smartest companies in Central Ohio for their ability to effectively build and lead successful organizations.
