National nonprofit honors Pennsylvania business for adoption advocacy

(NEW HOLLAND, Pa.) – The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption will honor Quality Custom Cabinetry, Inc. (QCCI), a southeast Pennsylvania construction and design company, for its continued commitment to provide its employees with benefits to grow their families through adoption.

The Foundation will present QCCI with the Adoption-Friendly Workplace Award for the company’s generous benefits that have landed it on the Foundation’s Top 100 Adoption-Friendly Workplaces list for the last five years. The presentation will occur at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at QCCI headquarters (125 Peters Road, New Holland, Pa.).

The leadership team at QCCI believes that life is relational. If through their daily work they can, in some small way, improve home life, there really is nothing more beautiful. QCCI began its effort to support even more employee families in 2007 by creating adoption benefit policies. Today, QCCI offers adoption assistance up to $7,500 and four weeks of paid leave for employees who adopt. QCCI hopes its example will motivate other local companies to explore adoption benefit opportunities.

“We decided to establish the adoption benefits after looking at the average expense of a newborn child that we covered through our health package, but did not have any coverage for those families who could not have children. We found it easy to create the policy using the format that the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption gave as sample policies for possible adoption policies,” said Greg Reiff, QCCI Director of Human Resources, and program participant.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption is America’s only national nonprofit public charity dedicated exclusively to finding permanent homes for the more than 100,000 children waiting in U.S. foster care to be adopted.

In Pennsylvania, foster care statistics are as follows:

  • There are more than 14,000 children in foster care;
  • Of all U.S. states, Pennsylvania ranks sixteenth for the most children in foster care with 2,100 who are need of permanent families;
  • More than 60 percent of the children in Pennsylvania’s foster care system are older than 8; and
  • The average child spends more than a year under the state’s care.

“The number of children who live without families to call their own is unsettling, so we are encouraged by the commitment of companies in Pennsylvania to step up and help,” said Rita Soronen, president and CEO of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. “Businesses like QCCI that support their employees who adopt are not only forming better workplace environments, they allow them to be the attentive parents that all children deserve. Companies that offer benefits create a social environment that recognizes that families formed through adoption are just as important as families formed through birth.”

Businesses and organizations interested in offering adoption benefits can get started with the Foundation’s free toolkit which makes it easy to propose and establish and adoption benefits policy. The kit is available at

Editor’s Note: Rita Soronen, president and CEO of the Foundation, a QCCI representative, and employees who have adopted or are in the process of adopting will be available for interviews during the award presentation at QCCI headquarters (125 Peters Road, New Holland, Pa.).
