Olympic gold medalist Ricky Berens teams up with Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to raise awareness of foster care adoption

Ricky Berens, Charlotte native and 2009 Olympic gold medalist in freestyle swimming, has partnered with the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption to raise awareness about the more than 115,000 children in the U.S. foster care system waiting to be adopted.

Berens is participating in the Wendy’s Carolina Classic at the 2011 Charlotte UltraSwim, May 12-15 at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. Because of Wendy’s longtime commitment to the Carolina Classic, Berens became interested in its philanthropic efforts. He learned more about the amazing work of the Foundation which was created in 1992 by Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas, who was adopted.

“We are grateful to Ricky for helping us spread the important message of foster care adoption,” said Rita Soronen, president and CEO of the Foundation. “We know this partnership will continue beyond this weekend’s activities and generate awareness of children in Charlotte – and around the country – waiting for forever families.”

Staff from the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption will be on hand at the Classic to answer questions and distribute free materials.
