This is the final post in our series about our favorite Foundation milestones. Catch up with our others and read part 1, part 2, and part 3.

I had the incredible honor to be at the very beginning of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Together with Dave and many others, we shaped the very first mission, goals and objectives. I know without any doubt that Dave would be incredibly proud of what DTFA stands for, and what it has accomplished over two decades.

My favorite milestone constantly repeats itself … witnessing the power of the human spirit in the lives of the children we serve.

As Rita has shared in her blogs, many children in foster care have faced crisis situations. Their pasts have included abandonment, abuse and neglect. Any one of these circumstances can scar a young child forever. But the human spirit in these children survives – and thrives —  and they look forward to brighter futures through adoption. I’ve met siblings who suffered from years of physical abuse show incredible resiliency and now talk about going to college. I met a darling little girl abandoned by her parents, and nurtured by her adoptive family to become an energetic young teen living, as she calls it, “a normal life.”

The personal stories of how these children have not let past circumstances control their future dreams has been incredibly rewarding to me. They provide great hope for the children still waiting in foster care, and they instill a powerful confidence that the Foundation’s mission still stands true.
