National Adoption Month: 4 Ways to Make a Difference

Posted on October 31, 2022

November is National Adoption Month — a special time to celebrate families that have grown through adoption and raise awareness of the more than 115,000 children in foster care across the United States who are waiting for someone to step forward to adopt them.

Youth like Willie, who was placed in foster care after experiencing severe abuse and neglect. Thankfully, Willie’s journey changed when he was referred to the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption’s Wendy’s Wonderful Kids® program and met his adoption recruiter, Melissa.

With help from Melissa and the Foundation’s caring community of supporters, Willie was adopted by Stefanie and Geffrey at age 12.

“Now that I’m adopted, I feel great! I feel like myself again,” said Willie.

Here are 4 ways that you can make a difference during National Adoption Month and throughout the year in finding forever families for more children lingering in foster care like Willie.

Thank a Wendy’s Wonderful Kids adoption professional

Because of the tireless efforts of Wendy’s Wonderful Kids recruiters, more than 12,000 children across the United States and Canada now have a permanent home. But our work isn’t done yet. Help us say thank you to these professionals for their commitment to serving the most vulnerable children and youth in foster care.

Spread the word

Raise awareness about the urgent need for foster care adoption by following the Foundation on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and subscribing to our YouTube channel. You can also add impact to your inbox by joining our mailing list for monthly emails with news, resources, stories and more. Then, forward to a friend!

Wear your support

Purchase a pack of foster care adoption awareness wristbands to share with those who have a special place in their hearts for adoption.

We are also grateful to Homage for helping to raise awareness with the “Love Makes a Family” t-shirt. A portion from the sale of each shirt benefits the Foundation’s mission.

Consider fostering or adopting

Every day, more than 50 youth age out of foster care without the stability and support of a permanent family. Download our free, step-by-step guide that answers frequently asked questions and offers resources to support you or someone you know on their adoption journey.

Together, we will achieve the vision that every child will have a permanent home and a loving family. Thank you!
