Celebrating Siblings Brought Together Through Adoption

Siblings are often some of our first and closest friends. They understand our lived experiences and who we are in a way that few others can. We celebrate the bond of siblings brought together through foster care adoption with help from our generous supporters. ❤️

When Merriah was adopted at 14, so many things changed in her life — including taking on a new role as a big sister to Harlow. “My little sister is probably the light of my life,” Merriah shared. She added that she tries to lead by example for Harlow, and that it’s so much fun to have a sister who looks up to her and wants to spend time with her 24/7.

Michael spent more than six years in foster care, worried he would be separated from siblings Liam and Nathan. Thankfully, Delon and Melisa adopted them with support from the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption-Canada. Michael is grateful for a home where he can grow up with his brothers and rest assured that their needs will be taken care of. “Growing up with my brothers is the most important thing to me,” Michael shared.

Being adopted led to the boys having a new sibling — little sister, Leah, who was also adopted. “I’m really glad to be her older brother — she’s very important to me,” Michael said. “We have a lot in common, even though she’s younger, and she’s easy to talk to.”

During Isaiah, Jordan and Sophia’s time in foster care, they were often separated and longed to be together under one roof. “I was worried because I didn’t know what was happening to my sister,” Jordan said. The siblings were reunited when Shane and Adrian became their forever family. “I just felt excited finally being with both of them,” Isaiah shared. Sophia, adopted at age 4, said that she loves being with her brothers because they make her laugh.

In addition to having two biological sisters, Conner gained a sister and a brother when Jayme and James adopted him at age 12. “[My brother and I] like to build things, and it is so nice to have a brother that I can play with,” Conner shared. Jayme shared that the bond between the two boys is so special to see.

Of the youth served by our Wendy’s Wonderful Kids program, 78% are part of a sibling group. Wendy’s Wonderful Kids adoption recruiters work diligently to find loving, permanent families where these siblings can grow up together. A rigorous, five-year national evaluation revealed that children referred to the program, including teenagers, children with special needs and siblings, are up to 3x more likely to be adopted.

Support from our caring community allows us to continue this important work and serve more youth still waiting for their forever family.
